And his name is. . . .

Before I get to the name, I'd like to thank everyone for their participation at the Baby Boy #3 blog today. It has been really great for us to get to share the day with all of you. Thanks for your comments, votes, prayers, love and support.

It has been a great day, things have gone wonderfully (we'll see how the first night goes).

But if you're still reading this blog, you're not reading it for the fluff. You want some real breaking news.

Christa wants me to make sure that everyone is aware that we reserve the right to change the name without notice (and we did it with Baby Boy #2, so these are not just hollow threats). However, for the time being, the name that we have chosen after much consultation, great contemplation, and a few arm wrestling matches is:

TY JEREMY DASTRUP.

Thanks again to all. Stay tuned over the next day or two for a few more pictures and perhaps a video or two.

The Evidence

Ladies and gentlemen. . . .

Christa and Brigham Dastrup proudly announce the arrival of their third baby boy at 4:10pm on January 24th, 2009. My friends, we may be experienced at this birthing business, but it never loses its beauty and wonder.

Christa was absolutely amazing!! Let me repeat--absolutely amazing. She went through the entire process with elegance and serenity, despite an epidural that definitely didn't provide quite the level of anesthesia she had with rounds one and two.

BB#3 did quite well himself. He was a bit blue for a little while, but pinked up pretty well with a bit of oxygen. He weighs 7lbs. 3 oz. (another family record) and has a moderate amount of light brown hair. His length is not known to me at this time.

Unfortunately, despite all of your help, a name has not been finalized at this time. Keep your votes and suggestions coming. Now that we have a face to put to the name perhaps we'll be more successful.

Get the confetti ready

9.5 cm, complete effacement. Here we go!!

stats

the stats you are expecting--6 cm, 75%

The stats you might not be:
A. 27. BB#3 will be the third child of a third child of a third child. Perhaps we will name him Cube or call him 27.
B. 39 and 44. Assuming the litte chap is born today, he will have been in utero for 39 weeks and 2 days. That gives him the Christa and Brigham Dastrup family record for longest gestation. However, he does not even come close to what is, as far as I know, the overall Dastrup family record of 44.5 weeks. The holder of that record, for those that don't know, is none other than myself. Mom, your place in heaven is assured for many reasons, but you get serious bonus points for that one. Thank you.
C. 7 lbs. 2. oz. My guess on how much this kid will weigh.
D. 34. The number of weeks Christa measures right now. Thus the induction.
E. January 24th in history--Lord Baden Powell started the first scout troop, St. Petersburg was renamed Leningrad (before being renamed St. Petersburg) Mary Lou Retton and Neil Diamond were born.

An Ode

Many, many, years ago,
(Kids walked uphill both ways through snow)
And every baby came to earth
By excruciating, painful birth
And then, one day, there was this dude,
Who thought, "That's mean, unkind, and rude."
All women will think I am the man,
When they hear of my splendid plan.
I'll stick a needle in their back
And give them a most tasty snack.
Instead of screaming, groaning, tears,
A smile will form between their ears.
And so that is just what he did,
And now when moms give birth to kids,
They smile, they laugh, they rarely cry,
And don't feel like they're going to die.
So here's to joy and down with pain
Three cheers for dear Bupivicaine!
I think I'll paint a great big mural,
To share the love of the epidural.

To all of those women who "go natural," either through their own choice or due to a poorly functioning epidural, my hat goes off to you. To my own wife who was feeling some pretty fierce cramps before the second attempt at the epidural brought relief, you're my hero and super tough. To the person who figured out how to help my wife sleep through labor--we're forever in your debt.

(In case the poetry obscured the details, the epidural went in about 1:45 and now Christa is getting her traditional pre-birth nap)

Estrogen

There has been some degree of unrest among the fans of the blog about no new update in the last few hours. In truth, Christa has been contracting every three to four minutes for a while, but she has done that so many times over the past few months that I can't imagine that will phase her iron cervix in the slightest. Therefore I have nothing to post about. Consequentially, I am forced to improvise.

As a final consolation prize to my wife as she awaits a household where she will be outnumbered 4 to 1, I brought the very chick-flicky "Ballet Shoes" starring none other than Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter shows. I must admit I found it a very pleasant show to nap during, but was not especially entertained by the show itself. Christa gives it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

If BB#3 spurns medicine to pursue a career as a ballerino, I'll blame Hermione.

This may take longer than I had thought. . . . so much for all the great uterus training.

Why is this anyone's business?

January 24th 9:30am

Let me be honest. I've never fully understood why many of the details surrounding a woman's labor and delivery process become public news. However, after two of my own children and numerous births of nieces, nephews, and friends, I've realized that for some reason, the state of the cervix is a critical piece of information to publish.

Therefore, at 9:30 the initial cervical exam shows 3cm dilation, 50% effacement. Ultrasound shows that thankfully BB#3 isn't breach anymore. The head is down and ready for business.

Stay tuned. . . Pitocin starts now.

Let the Party Begin

Welcome to Room 2, 4th Floor, Pavilion Building, University of New Mexico Hospital.

This will be the first address for BB#3 (still doesn't have a name, keep the votes and suggestions coming), albeit for a short period of time.

We're getting checked in, we've met our nurse Tamara (pronounces differently than our Tamara--Tuh-maw-ra), and we're getting asked a bunch of questions about organ donation and medical power of attorney--great way to calm the nerves.

Speaking of nerves, I think we're every bit as excited about this as previous Dastrup Family births, but the nice thing is that the anxiety level is significantly lower. Experience is nice.

What to name Baby Boy Number 3

I feel like in many ways, Christa and I are decent parents. We usually feed our kids, we teach them important things like how to use the TV remote, and we draw the line at one dessert per meal. However, one area where our parenting skills have not come easily is with naming our children. While we do ultimately figure things out, this is a painful process for us.

We are not hiding anything, we are only a few hours away from the big arrival and we don't have a clue what we we are going to call the kid.

Please help! Vote in our poll to the right, give us ideas for other names in the comments section, send financial contributions--any help will be accepted to help us solve this crisis.

Before Picture

We had to have Christa really pooch her belly out as far as she could to make her look like she was ready to have a baby tomorrow, but to prove that she actually was pregnant and didn't steal Baby Boy #3 from the nursery, we provide the following evidence.

Announcing the Creation of Baby Boy Number 3

"Wait a minute," you might say, "Isn't it a bit late (and a bit personal) to announce the creation of a baby boy that is about to be born."

Absolutely. This proclamation, however, announces the creation of the BLOG regarding the birth of the third son of Christa and Brigham Dastrup.

After previous experiences trying to share news regarding the birth of our boys as we tried to keep out tired eyes both open and watching what was going on with our new arrival (I know, I know, "eat, sleep, poop, repeat" but when he's yours it's all still awesome), I decided to try this 21st century approach to sharing info with those we want so much to participate in our big day.

So, welcome to Baby Boy Number 3. We welcome as many comments as you all have time to share. Keep coming back for pictures, the ever-important (though I've never really figured out why) height and weight statistics, new poll questions, and who knows what else.

Thanks for all of your love and support!
